Barbara Willis Yeomans of Harkers Island was to Down East women’s softball that Babe Ruth was to major league baseball; bigger than life. In 1988 she founded the Downeast Girls Softball League and coached in it until 1995. Her team won the North Carolina 16-18 slow pitch state championship in 1995.
The Babe Ruth Softball Volunteer of the Year Award is the highest award given in Babe Ruth Softball. Its recipient must embody the spirit of the Babe Ruth League philosophy which is to provide the best possible sports experience for every child who has the desire to play and to promote participation and opportunity. Barbara Yeomans admirably and enthusiastically exemplifies that philosophy.
